- Description
1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?
All children have a baseline assessment carried out after their first 6 weeks at Norris Green Pre-school. Parents input is gained on entry and teamed together with staff observations to create a baseline assessment of all children which parents are part of. If children attended a previous setting then we will work with the previous setting to establish children’s levels of development.
Children’s progress is monitored continually and shared with parents through reviews. If it is felt that children may need extra help to support their development then further advice from partner agencies will be sought to ensure targeted support for the child. Parental consent will be sought before contacting other agencies. Play plans would also be introduced in the setting and strategies and targets will be discussed and agreed with parents.
All children will undergo a two year development check in partnership with the child’s health visitor (where possible) parents again will be involved in this check and kept informed of outcomes of the check.
If parents feel that their child may have special educational needs then they can discuss this at any time with their child’s keyworker. Parents can also get further advice and support from their child’s health visitor or local children's centre.
2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?
Staff within the setting will support all children’s needs including both care and educational needs.
Children’s progress will be continually monitored and regularly shared with parents through review meetings. Staff will monitor children’s progress through observation, learning journal, parental input, small group work, key worker system, EYFS, Early Learning Goals and well-being and involvement scales.
Staff will observe children’s interests and development levels and use these to create next steps for their learning to help children reach their individual learning targets.
If it is felt that additional support may be needed to help a child reach their targets then this will be sought from other agencies as necessary with parental consent.
3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs?
Children’s needs will be determined in partnership with parents and other agencies for example health visitors, other nursery providers. We will use observation to discover the children’s needs and tailor activities to suit a child age, level of development and individual interests.
We will use the EYFS as a benchmark for children’s development throughout their time spent here
4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?
The setting has a designated Special Educational needs co-ordinator who can discuss any concerns with parents and families and can guide them through the process of obtaining additional support if needed.
The setting works closely with the local authority and accesses support from quality development officer’s, Social Care, Health Visiting teams and local children’s centres. We work closely with parent champions who can help get you settled in nursery. We are also able to access support from speech and language therapist, education psychologist, SENISS (Special Educational Needs Inclusion Support Service) and paediatricians.
Staff are happy to support parents and families with any specialist service and can accompany to appointments etc. if required. Staff are able to provide reports on children’s learning and development where necessary.
We are members of our local consortia which allows us to access support from other agencies and also access a variety of training for staff to develop their knowldege in the area of SEN.
5. How accessible is the setting?
The setting is situated on a main road not far from the local motorway (M57) it is easily accessible for both cars and pedestrians.
Our setting is available for all. The setting is wheelchair accessible and all equipment is low level for ease of access. We have disabled toileting facilities and have staff trained in SEN to ensure that we can support all children and families accessing our provision.
Any children and parents can be supplied with all of our literature in an alternative language.
We are happy to discuss any individual needs your child or yourselves may have to enable your family to access our provision. Reasonable adjustments will be made as necessary.
6. How support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?
We have close links schools in the Liverpool area. Particularly with schools within the local area of Norris Green. We attend local cluster meetings with these schools every half term so we have strong links and will the setting communication.
When we are informed of a new provision a child will be attending we will work closely with parents and carers as well as the new provision to ensure all needs are catered for. Written records of children’s learning and development will be produced for the new setting.
Staff from the new provision will be invited into our nursery to meet the child here and observe them in this environment. They will also have the opportunity to discuss anything with the child’s keyworker. Staff will accompany children and parents to visits to the new setting in order to support the child in settling.
If parents require support to find a local school or different provision then staff are happy to support them to do this through looking at reports and attending visits with them.
7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?
Parents can be involved in the setting in a variety of ways. Upon beginning their time at the nursery parents are asked to provide an idea of where children are up to with their learning and development through the form of a checklist. Parents are also invited into the setting regularly for reviews of their child’s learning.
Parents are welcomed into the setting during induction periods and can visit with their children until they are happy to leave them in our care. Parents are welcome to come into nursery and share any skills they have with the children for example if a parent enjoys art and craft they may like to come into nursery and do some painting with the children. Parents are also given the opportunity to join us on trips through the year.
We encourage home learning with children and parents are able to take a range of resources home with them such as activity boxes, song bags, story sacks and more. These are all things that parents can do at home with their children and they have opportunities to feedback to staff what they have done so staff can use this when planning for children’s learning.
We regularly hold open days for events such as children in need where parents can attend with their children and enjoy the activities on offer.
We value parent’s feedback and thoughts and have opportunities for parents to provide feedback through questionnaires, comments book, suggestion box, complaints. We are currently developing a parents board which will meet every term to discuss priorities for the setting and future actions etc.
