We are now preparing for the new semester and the challenges that this is likely to bring.

 

The Clinic is well known for its immigration work but we also have two other important areas that we wanted to update you about.

  

Free Family Advice Law Clinic

We have 2 solicitors specialising in family work.

The Family law advice service provide free, confidential advice from specialist family law solicitors and support with form filling and statement writing.  We can offer appointments in person or online.  Advice is in relation to child law only, we do not provide advice on financial matters.

The Family Court Help Desk runs in Liverpool Family Court on Thursdays from 30th September providing a drop-in legal advice for litigants in person at first hearings in child arrangement cases.

 

Under areas of law:

Child arrangements, special guardianship, contact with children in care, LGBTQ families

 

We are not able to advice on financial matters.

 

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS and EDUCATIONAL, HEALTH and CARE PLAN LEGAL ADVICE

Appointments to be in person or online, depending on clients preference and availability of solicitor

Parents and carers of children with special educational needs can receive legal advice about all aspects of accessing education and support for their children in school .  We are also able to provide support preparing grounds of appeal to the Special Educational Needs Tribunal and to help parents prepare for the hearing

Our specialist education solicitor works with students to assist parents and carers of disabled children to gain the support they need at school or college.  This might be making them aware of the duties schools have to support children with additional needs or, most likely, assisting parents in their application for support through an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).  We help parents understand the EHC process. This includes advising parents about the right to request a particular school for their child and obtaining the therapeutic services their child may need.

We can help at any stage of the process up to and including an appeal to the SEN Tribunal.  We provide advice and assistance in relation to grounds of appeal to the SEN Tribunal, and may be able to help parents prepare appeals to the Tribunal - providing advice and assistance about evidence gathering, potential lines of argument and procedural matters.  We also hope to be able to offer parents who are otherwise unsupported assistance from students at an appeal. Though students will not represent parents, they will be able to support parents on the day of the hearing. 

How the clinic works?

Our staff are legally qualified solicitors. We are assisted by undergraduate and postgraduate law students. Students are trained and supervised throughout their placements and advice is given only by our solicitors.

Our clinic is completely free.

We are unable to formally represent clients but are able to advice and support through proceedings where agreed. We will explain to clients about legal aid eligibility and other funding options.

We offer face to face and on-line appointments.

How to refer

Please phone or email the clinic to make an appointment. Due to demand urgent appointments are rarely available and you should be prepared to wait up to 3 weeks for an appointment and sometimes longer out of term time.
