About the programme

It is an exciting time for children and young people in Liverpool as we start the journey towards becoming a UNICEF UK Child Friendly City along with our partners.

We want children and young people in Liverpool to enjoy the best quality of life and to be able to reach their full potential.

In a child friendly city children and young people:

  • Have a say about decisions that affect them.
  • Can express their views freely and are encouraged and supported to do that.
  • Can access good health, education, transport and other service.
  • Feel safe, prioritised and protected from discrimination and harm.
  • Can enjoy public spaces and meet other children and young people freely.

Our journey so far

After a consultation in September 2018 with young people and partners, we officially embarked on our journey to become a UNICEF UK Child Friendly City in March 2019.

Events included:

  • a radio interview with UNICEF UK and Young Advisors
  • raising the UNICEF UK flag above the Town Hall
  • a solo singing performance
  • a question and answer session with the Upper Schools' Parliament
  • an afternoon of storytelling for primary aged children at Central Library, with a special visit from Sky, a young police training dog.

Our partners including Alder Hey and Abbot's Lea School produced videos explaining what it means to them to be a Child Friendly City.

What next?

There are four phases to the programme: Discover, Development, Delivery and Recognition. Working our way through these phases will take between three and five years.

Our launch in March 2019 means we're in the 'Discovery' phase, which will last for 6 months. This involves planning with partners to agree what they will do to be Child Friendly organisations and with young people to continue to put children's rights at the heart of the work we do in the city.

We meet with UNICEF UK on 2nd April to formally plan the discovery phase. This will involve setting up a panel to manage the programme and gather data to help us understand how the programme can make a positive impact. We'll also work with young people and partners to decide which three UNICEF UK badges we will focus on over the coming years.

What will UNICEF UK do?

The UNICEF UK team will be supporting our Child Friendly City journey through the delivery of training in children’s rights, advice and guidance, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. More information about this will follow shortly.

We very much look forward to working together to make Liverpool a Child Friendly City.
