Description

1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?

 Each child’s progress and development is monitored and reviewed.  If a child appears to be behind expected levels or where their progress gives cause for concern, the key person will discuss concerns with the settings SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) and the parents/carers. Agreed strategies will be put in place and further monitoring.  If it is agreed that the child needs other professional assessments, the setting will arrange this in collaboration with the parents/carers.

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?

 The setting operates a very successful ‘key person’ system.  Each child will have their own key person, who will work closely with the parents/carers to support the child in meeting their expected levels of development in the Early Years Foundation Stage. The key person will regularly monitor the child’s progress and plan their next steps.  Parents are actively involved in the planning process and are given a summary of their child’s development at the end of each term.

 3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs?

 Each child has their own unique planning schedule, which is based on their individual likes and interests.  This helps the child to be engaged in their learning.

 4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?

 All staff in the setting have an early years qualification, three members of staff hold a BA (hons), one has an Early Years Professional Status.  The setting is dedicated to professional development and all staff attends regular training to ensure skills and knowledge is kept up to date. The setting has good relationships with Liverpool Early Years Team, Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologist, Health Visitors and the Local Children’s Centre.  The setting will support the family in accessing these specialists if needed.

 5. How accessible is the setting?

 The setting is a five-minute walk from Breck Road, which is the bus route for a number of buses.  There is a ramp to the entrance of the building and also at the rear, leading to the outdoor play area. The building has two class rooms downstairs and two upstairs.

 6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

 The setting offers settling in sessions to new children and their families.  The number of sessions is entirely up to the parent/carer, they can accompany their child on the visits until they feel confident in leaving their child on a visit on their own.  For the children starting another nursery or school reception class, staff will support the transition by talking to the children about their new setting, going on walks and taking photographs of their new school, introducing uniforms to the role play area.  The children also put together their own scrap book about their new setting.  The Manager and staff are committed to supporting the children in transferring to the next stage of education and actively encourage teachers to visit the nursery to meet the children.  We are happy to accompany children on taster days to their new school and will attend any transition meetings that are planned.  The setting always provides a transition report with the agreement of the parents/carers to be passed to the new setting.

 7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

 The setting has very strong parent partnerships.  From the outset parents are actively involved in the planning cycle for their children.  All decisions to access other professional support will be done in partnership with the parents/carers. We also offer a parent/volunteer scheme, giving parents the opportunity to spend time in the setting and share their experiences with the staff and at the same time further develop their own skills.
