Oliver House

Oliver House School and Care Provision offers a unique Educational and residential service for young people aged 6-19 who have severe learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders and associated behaviours.

Capacity: 40 Pupils

Each young person has the opportunity to be educated through a highly individualised educational programme as well as learning necessary independence and social skills as well as independent living skills and recreational activities.

The following questions have been developed by and may be of particular interest to children and young people

1.How will the school /college know if I need extra help?

We undertake a rigorous system of monitoring pupil’s progress , supporting achievement by removing barriers to learning and using a wide range of strategies to foster a culture of life long learning and independent living skills for all pupils.

2. What should I do if I think I need extra help?

Pupil voice is promoted through a variety of mediums, individual programmes can be designed around individual pupil needs to support progress and achievement.

3. If I have difficulty taking part in school/college activities what different arrangements can be made for me?

An individual timetable is created that is flexible in meeting needs at any point in the day, individual interests are used to motivate learners. A number of sensory and communication strategies are used.

4. How will I participate in planning my targets?

Through feedback pupils are aware of their current levels of achievement and are informed of next steps through a variety of mediums for example AFL, reward systems, achievement assemblies, slideshows and direct feedback.

5. How does the school/college know how well I’m doing?

Regular meetings, assessments, reports and updates from teachers, registered managers, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and the behaviour analyst. Pupil voice is promoted.

6. Who will help me to be more independent in school?

There is a strong emphasis on supporting pupils to become independent at all key stages - therefore this prepares them for adult life.. The school timetable incorporates structure and predictability to give the young people security to access the curriculum with increasing success. There is a strong emphasis on supporting the pupils to become independent, especially with regards to personal care and life skills.

7. Who will help me to be more independent in my community?

The school promotes pupils to learn and participate, and to make informed choices by providing them with the skills and strategies they need to manage their anxieties and behaviour. Ultimately, the aim is for pupils to transfer their self-management skills into the home and community settings.

8. How will my parents/carers be supported to encourage me to be more independent?

Programmes that are successful in school are shared with parents and other professionals through home visits or at meetings.

9. Who should I speak to if I’m worried about something?

The Alert programme is implemented so that pupils  know exactly what to do when they are worried. Pupils can also speak to staff and some pupils have worry books/boxes.

10. How do school/college staff get extra help from other experts?

All staff are highly trained in autism and further expert advice is sort according to individual needs.

11. What help is there to get me ready to start college?

Social stories, pathway plans, taster days, pupil centred planning, staff support.

12.What help is there to get me ready to start work?

Sensory programmes, positive rewards, teaching to special interests, movement breaks, offsite learning, visual support, communication programmes.
