Mossley Hill Pre-School

Mossley Hill Pre-School is a non- profitable provision which has been established for over 25 years and is based in St Matthews and St James Church Rooms.

Recently the Pre-School has been refurbished and offers a bright stimulating environment, which is divided into all areas of learning. Children from age 2-4 are in the same room, which allows the younger children to learn from and engage with their peers.

We have also updated a secure outside area, which includes a mud kitchen, allowing children to use the gardens throughout the year. The children plant their own fruit and vegetables in the raised beds.

Staff are all qualified at level 3 and NNEB.

The curriculum is tailored to include the children's interests and sets the foundation for literacy and the love to read. The activities provided help promote curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and building children's capacity to thrive and form relationships.

Description

1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs.

At Mossley Hill Pre-School, we do ongoing observational assessments of all the children in our care, by carrying out 3 and 4 year old checks and the 2 year old summative assessment . Our staff talk and liaise with parents/carers and use observations to link in with the development matters. this helps us to identify the individual needs of the children and we l then plan effectively of each child. The Special Educational Coordinator (SENCO), along with the appointed key person, will have a meeting with the parents/carers and if necessary will seek other professionals advice to identify individual needs.
If a child attends another setting or has moved from another setting, we will always make contact with their key person and try and gather information to help us with a baseline assessment.
We ask parents to complete an ' All about me ' form , this helps us gather evidence of their child's interests and how they learn at home.

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?

The Special Educational Coordinator and the key person will plan an educational programme with the help of the child's parents/carers input, this will be reviewed every half term. this plan will identify needs and next steps for the child, accessing any additional support where necessary (speech and language, educational psychologist, play therapists) and any other specialist services.
We use the Early Years Foundation Stage, Learning Journals, Observations, sensory play, visuals/symbols, small group work to help us monitor and measure the children's progress.

3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs?

All children have a settling in period, the key person will discuss this with the parents/carers on the open day. SEN children's needs are met through individual play plans, observation, learning journals and continuous assessments.
We work closely with parents/carers to identify how their child learns and to plan, adapt the curriculum to meet their next steps.

4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?

We work in partnership with the local authority, health and social care services.
We are members of the Early Years Consortia and attend these meetings every half term. All staff attend various training courses to ensure that standards are consistently met. Staff have paediatric first aid and training in using Epi pens.
If a child with specific needs is present, we will always endeavour to go on specialist training in order to ensure we are supporting the child fully.

5. How accessible is the setting?

The setting is wheelchair accessible with a ramp leading to the Pre-School. There is plenty of space in the setting to manoeuvre a wheelchair to all areas of learning in the main hall. There is a disabled toilet with a changing facilities.
We are happy to discuss your child individual needs and to make reasonable adjustments where necessary.

6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

We have build strong links with the local schools in the area and invite School Teachers from the reception classes to visit us in the setting. The Manager and Deputy also visit the schools and take photographs of the school and make books for the children to take home and share with their families.
We ensure that we send all children's notes and transitions forms to any new school and where necessary have a meeting with the school SENCO about specific children and their individual needs.
We have made a transition's box, consisting of school uniforms, lunch boxes, book bags etc. for the children to play and familiarise themselves with.
Children from one of the local schools come in to the setting and give a short presentation to the younger children about their transition to their new school.
Parents are given leaflets and information about School readiness for their children.

7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

We invite parents to join our committee group and get involved with fund raising activities, sports day, coffee mornings, Christmas events and stay and play sessions. We have an 'open door policy' parents/carers are always welcome to talk with the Manager or their child's key person. We encourage parents/carers to accompany us on outings and visits. Parents are also invited to help us grow vegetables in our allotment and run workshops about any special skills or interest's they may have.
Parents are invited to regular progress checks for their children and we direct parents to access local children centre facilities and parent groups in the area.
