Description

1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?

Children are assessed when they start nursery and their progress is monitored closely. If there are any areas where there appears to be a problem we have the experience to be able to spot it quickly and to offer help and support.

We are also able to source external advice/help/support if needed. Staff and management are available to parents at all times to discuss children’s progress and wellbeing.

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child?

We ensure that children achieve and enjoy their learning by operating a key person system which facilitates the building of strong relationships between the children in our care and their parents and ensures that each child’s progress is encouraged and closely monitored. Children are made to feel safe and cared for, gaining reassurance and a strong sense of security. We have a dedicated and loyal team of staff who are happy to be here, this gives the nursery a stable, happy and loving atmosphere where children can grow and thrive.

3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs?

The setting is organised by chronological age. Within this framework we maintain a flexible approach to learning which ensures that the needs of every child are catered for. We are attentive to their individual preferences and we provide activities to stimulate interest and encourage learning. We utilise both child and adult initiated play which is extended through observation and the planning of next steps. Our staff are highly qualified, motivated and knowledgeable in all aspects of child development. They use resources effectively and imaginatively so that children are set challenging yet achievable goals which take into account their varying levels of ability

4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting?

We work in partnership with the local authority, health and social care services.

We are members of the Early Years Consortia.

Staff have been trained/are qualified in everything from Safeguarding, Paediatric First Aid, Behaviour Management through to degree level teaching qualifications.

We have two trained Special Needs Co-ordinators on the premises and are able to access extra help with problems in speech and language and children who show evidence of autistic spectrum disorders.

5. How accessible is the setting?

Unfortunately, due to the physical limitations of our old and beautiful building, we are not wheelchair accessible. Barring this we are happy to discuss your child individual needs and to make reasonable adjustments

6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education?

The whole ethos of the pre-school room is focussed on encouraging children to grow in ability and confidence. They are used to, not just learning something new each day, loving books and stories and gaining social skills, but to the structure of that day - to lining up, to sitting quietly and listening when appropriate, to joining in songs and activities, to putting hands up and not shouting out, to eating meals in a polite and social environment, to asking to go to the toilet and putting their coats on when they go out. All the things that will make life easier and more fun when school starts.

We also maintain a close relationship with local schools and teachers/classroom assistants are invited into the setting to meet the children in a familiar environment before school starts.

7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

Before each child starts we introduce the ‘Parents as Partners’ concept which underpins our philosophy here at Monkton. Forms are always available for parents to share comments, information and suggestions. We provide parents with a copy of the EYFS learning and development grid which we use to monitor progress. Our ’Learning Journey,’  which is a formal record of that progress, is available to parents at all times and is given to them when the child leaves.

We have regular Parents Evenings and social occasions where feedback is actively sought and followed up on. Our parents know that staff are always available to discuss any aspect of a child’s progress.
