Makaton

What is Makaton? Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order.

I am a licensed Makaton tutor with 13 years experience supporting both children and adults with a variety of communication needs and disabilities.  I deliver a variety of workshops and play sessions to both parents and professionals.

Makaton Signing for Babies - A 6 week rolling programme for parents/carers and babies/toddlers from Bridge Chapel, Garston. This course teaches parents and carers 130 signs and symbols covering immediate needs such as food, drink, and Mummy.  Children are kept engaged through songs and activities whilst adults are given opportunities to practice the signs learnt and engage in shared attention with their child to support basic communication.  The cost is £55 and includes a pocket book of signs and symbols and a certificate.  This course, like all of my training, is open to families of children with and without a communication difficulty. The next course commences 15th July at 1.45pm.

Taster Sessions (1.5 hours)- This is a brief overview of the Makaton Language Programme suitable for a variety of organisations and business who are keen to know a little more about Makaton.  Here I teach 30 signs and symbols and enable participants to be able to hold a basic conversation with a Makaton user.  This can be delivered in house to organisations at a cost of £30 per head.  Participants will receive a certificate.

Beginners Workshops - This 12 hour training covers signs and symbols from stages 1-4 of the core vocabulary and is aimed at both parents and professionals.  Training can be delivered over 2 x 6 hour days or 4 x 3 hour sessions. All my sessions are flexible and can be delivered both in the evenings and at weekends.  Participants can attend just day 1 of this training as an introduction to Makaton, where I will cover stages 1 and 2 of the core vocabulary. Beginners workshops range from £130-£150. Costs include participants manuals, pocket book of signs and symbols and a certificate.

From September I will also be delivering a further workshop covering stages 5-8 of the core vocabulary.

Bespoke packages- I am able to tailor training to meet the needs of various settings and organisations.  As an example I have been delivering 3.5 hour training sessions to nurseries, teaching around 130 signs and symbols, nursery rhymes and providing examples of ways to incorporate Makaton into the setting for £65pp.  Settings receive a pocket book of signs and symbols and a certificate.

Play session - In addition to staff training I also deliver play sessions within nursery settings. Here I incorporate Makaton into activities and use both signing and symbols alongside stories and songs. Tailored sessions start from £200.

Home visiting- 1-1 support within the home to promote development and communication working on SMART targets. Prices depend on level of support required.

All training options can be tailored to meet the needs of a setting, organisation or individual.  All training routes are very flexible to fit in with the busy life of families and to enable settings to release staff with as little inconvenience as possible.
