Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust: Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
This unit is for individuals having an acute episode of mental ill-health, who have become so severely distressed that they may cause a risk to themselves or others.
Service users may be at the PICU after being detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.
A dedicated group of specialist doctors and nurses are at the core of the PICU team, organising and supervising the treatment delivered in the unit and providing a lower stimulus environment and access to intensive one-to-one care or support as needed, to aid recovery.
Staffing levels within the PICU are higher than in other areas due to the higher level of care needed for service users.
The care and treatment offered is intensive, patient-centered and multidisciplinary and responds to critical situations.
The length of stay would usually not normally exceed eight weeks.
We aim to deliver care that respects individuals, values diversity, preserves dignity and promotes recovery and inclusion.
