St James Pre-School

St James Pre School has been operating for over 45 years and has always been at the heart of the community.

We are a sessional pre-school where children can come and play learn and develop in a safe, stimulating, caring, inclusive environment. Children are cared for by vetted and suitably qualified staff members who treat children as individuals in their own right and will encourage them to devlop at their own rate and in their own time.

Description

1. How does the setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs? 

If your child is new to our setting then his/her progress will be assessed initially through discussions with yourselves. We always start with what the child CAN already do, childrens progress is monitored and discussed with you regularly. We ensure children are reaching their appropriate developmental milestones using guidance from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) document.

If you have concerns your child is not reaching appropropriate developmental milestones, we will then be able to provide appropriate support for your child if required. We are happy to liase with any other professional and to support you in accessing services or to signpost you to appropriate  services for support.

We will always seek consent before putting any support in place for you and your family and parents will be involved in the process every step of the way. If parents have any concerns with regard to their child, they can have a discussion with their child's key carer or the settings trained Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO) and they will be able to support you and your child appropriately.

The settings SENDCO recieves regular updated training and attends regular consortia and cluster groups to ensure she is able to provide appropriate support to the staff team or any child or their family.

We will also liaise with any other or previous setting attended by your child including childminders, again with your consent.

2. How will the staff in the setting support my child? 

The progress of all children is monitored and reviewed regularly and shared with parents. We measure progress using; the EYFS assessment guidance, Learning Journals, observations, sensory play and small group work. Each child is assigned a key carer who will be responsible for liasing with parents to establish children's starting points, observing, assessing and planning appropriate and stimulating activities for the child’s age and stage of development and that are based on children's individual and unique interests.

Key carers and the settings SENDCO can also support you and your family to access specialist services if required. 

3. How will the curriculum be matched to my child's needs? 

The setting organises the key groups according to chronological age, this ensures activities are more likely to be age and stage appropriate to the children within that group. The curriculum is adapted to meet a child's individual needs and interests and based on what parents have observed at home also.

4. What specialist services and expertise can be accessed by the setting? 

We work in partnership with a number of other agencies and professionals such as the local authority and other health and social care services such as educational psychologists and speech and language therapists and many more health and social support services.

We attend regular consortia, cluster and training events with a range of other professionals and are able to access specialist services and support if required.

The staff team hold various qualifications from Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). One staff member holds a foundation degree and the majority of the staff team hold a level 3 qualification or above. Staff members can also support you to complete an Early Help assessment tool (EHAT) form and organise a multi agency response for your child and your family. 

All staff hold current paediatric first aid qualifications and have recieved training on various other subjects from speech and language development to suppporting children with ASD, and behaviour management. 

5. How accessible is the setting?

The setting is wheelchair accessible. We are happy to discuss your child individual needs and to make any reasonable adjustments necessary. We will create a care plan for your child with you and we can discuss any equipment, adjustments or training needs necessary to provide appropriate care for your child. 

6. How will the setting support my child in transferring to the next stage of education? 

We work closely with all of the local schools and beyond and have done so for quite some time. We have an effective transition policy and procedure in place and have received positive feedback from parents. We complete transition forms for each child that are shared with the child’s new setting with parental consent. We will also visit the schools with the children or invite the child’s teacher to our setting. We will also prepare the children by engaging in a number of activities and events that will help them have a stronger understanding of the changes ahead and prepare them for their transition.   

7. How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved? 

We recognise and value the contribution a parent can make to their child's learning and development and encourage parents to be as involved as they can in our pre-school community.

We invite parents to discuss their child's progress regularly formally during regular parents evenings and informally during chats at the beginning or end of the session. Parents are encouraged to contribute to their child's learning and development files and will be given the opportunity to share experiences and observations of their child in their child's home contact book provided by the pre-school.

 Parents volunteer regularly at the setting to be involved in weekly walks, social events and stay and play sessions. Parents are also represented on the governing body for the pre -school.

We also send out regular questionnaires asking parents and children their views and opinions with regard to all aspects of the day to day running of the pre-school, and will adapt policies or practise where reasonable.based on those views and opinions.
